The Biggest Annual Lobster Event of the Year

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa West takes great pride in once again hosting “The Biggest Annual Lobster Event of the Year” on Friday May 23, 2014 at the Centurion Centre, 170 Colonnade Road South. This dinner-dance has been a “sell-out” for the past 35 years and gets bigger every year. This is the major annual fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa-West and all proceeds from this event are returned to the community.

This year’s event will be headlined by the music of The New Classics which were a hit last year. As well, there will be door prizes, spot-dance prizes and a silent auction.  Doors open at 5:30 pm and dinner starts at 6:30 pm. For those who are lobster challenged, there is a BBQ chicken dinner alternative. Please so indicate when ordering tickets.

Tickets are still $55.00 and can be obtained through the Ticket Hotline at (613) 787-9977 or via email to

How Can I Help With The Bed Race?

Building on Success

In 2013 the Accora Village Bed Race for Kiwanis presented by Allstream helped raise over $50k for Kiwanis Club of Ottawa's programs.

So, how can we make it better?

1. Participate in On-line Pledging by Joining Peter's Team

An important change that we made last year was the implementation of an on-line pledging system. This allowed teams to send out emails to friends and colleagues soliciting donors. This worked very well, and we would like to extend it this year by asking any Kiwanian who is not part of a team, to join the Kiwanis Head Boards.

When you click on this link, you will be able to register for the event and join Peter Charboneau's Head Boards team. You don't have to run, you can just collect pledges.

After you have registered, you will get a link that you can add to your email signature and ask folks to sponsor your team.

As an example, here is Peter's link:, and we can even set up a special page for you: /sponsorPeter

2. Register Your Own Team

You can register your own team here and become part of this fun Winterlude event.

3. Sponsor our Youth Groups

The good news for the Bed Race is that we have our major sponsors looked after, however we are always looking for sponsors for our youth teams. For $500 you can sponsor one of the Key Clubs, Circle K or Cadet teams to allow them to participate. Last year Air Cadets and Circle K both raised an additional $1,000 each in pledges.

4. Help Out on the Day of the Event

On the day of the event, Feb 1, 2014, we need about 20 volunteers on the ice for each of two shifts. Initial setup, finish line judges, starters, help in the food tent. Shifts are about 3 hours, and it is always a fun event.

Drop Jamie Johnson a note.

Upgrading Your Laptop?

Want to get rid of your old ones? The Secondary School in the Mayan village of Tekal de Venegas, Yucatan, Mexico, has about 300 students. Most are of Mayan Indian descent. At present the school has one computer for all students who range in ages 8 to 12 years. The Mexican Government has instituted a policy to make internet available to all schools but there is a shortage of equipment to receive the signal. Betty and Brian McGowan of Edwards, Ontario have been transporting and donating material to the town Library, Medical Clinic and the School for the past 10 years. They will be going there again in January 2014. This year the School asked if it would be possible to bring them laptops to help with their curriculum. If you can help with the laptops, please contact Betty or Brian McGowan 613-821-1840 Thank you!
