During their Annual Kiwanis Medical Foundation Luncheon, Victor Ferreira, this year's Committee Chair, gave us an update on the year's activities.
Steve Georgopoulos was pleased to present a cheque on behalf of KMF for $21,000 to Kiwanian Jamie Johnson for the clinical trial of iCanSpeak, a software application program that assists with speech fluency. This software will provide patients who stutter with a measurable improvement in speech fluency, by providing a form of real time speech delay, using an HP Pocket PC. The Kiwanis Medical Foundation is a proud supporter of Parkinson's Research as well as other health research projects in our community.
Our guest speakers, Dr. Grimes and Dr. Park, spoke of the new possibilities for intervention including gene therapy and gene screening. They noted that up to 3% of all people will develop some form of Parkinson's before the age of 65.
