Luncheon Meeting - Ellen Goodman

Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Laurier Room, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa.

"Citizen Advocacy - How we can ALL Make A Difference"   Ellen Goodman, a recently retired special educator, has worked as a volunteer and activist for several decades to help make things better - daily - for her community. She would like to share some of the community projects she has collaborated on, and some of the lessons learned doing so.
She will also highlight the very important work Kiwanis does in supporting such projects and promoting community health and vibrancy. The need for social inclusion for people with a disability is often a challenge.  In Ontario we have done a good job integrating children and youth with special needs into mainstream classes, but we have had less success in promoting these students' full independence once they leave school.   One example... the employment rate for people with disabilities is extremely low.
