KIWANIS CLUBS GET AKtive First Canadian Kiwanis-sponsored AKtion Club launched in Ottawa Ottawa

-- On Tuesday, October 5, 1999, the first Kiwanis-sponsored AKtion Club in Canada will be officially established. The charter meeting will take place at the Kent Street Legion, 330 Kent Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with guest speaker, Suzanne Pinel, Citizenship Court Judge and Past Chair of the CHEO Foundation.

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, in cooperation with the Nepean, Carleton, Vanier and Southenders Kiwanis Clubs, has been discussing and investigating this project over the past few years. Now, in 1999, partnered with the Ottawa Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, the AKtion Club has become a reality in the Ottawa area.

The Club has been organizing for this charter meeting and attracting members since August 1999; membership is now 24 and growing! The AKtion Club is a community service group composed of adult citizens who are developmentally disadvantaged. Members of AKtion Club strive to return to their communities the benefits, help and caring they have received, while at the same time developing important skills. “The Charter of AKtion Club is another example of Ottawa area Kiwanis Clubs working together to introduce innovative and important projects to the community.” said Ian Hendry, Immediate Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa.

“Building stronger communities together is what Kiwanis is all about.” Declared Thomas Assaly, who spearheaded this initiative and currently Chairs the meetings, “I am extremely proud of our efforts and of our AKtion Club members. Now that there’s an AKtion Club in Ottawa, you will be able to find the members anywhere there’s service to be rendered or fun to be had.”

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is celebrating 82 years of active fundraising and community involvement as a non-profit organization. The largest Kiwanis Club in Canada, and with over $600,000 returned to the local community each year, the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most active and dynamic service clubs in the world. One of the 8 000 Clubs in Kiwanis International, the Club has met every Friday since 1917 at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa.
