The 16th Annual Miracle Network Telethon for CHEO aired on June 5 and 6 at CJOH-TV marked the Hospital's 25th silver anniversary. Organizers believed that support-ing the Telethon is the best way to celebrate CHEO's 25 years of caring for children.
All money raised locally benefits the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the children who count on CHEO. All the children featured on the Telethon clearly demonstrated that CHEO's birthday was something to cel-ebrate.
Funds raised through the Telethon help CHEO to purchase new equipment, fund research, train staff, enhance the pediatric nature of the hospital, buy games, toys, books and to assist families in crises. More than 100 community groups, service clubs, companies and organizations appeared on the Telethon to present funds raised during their special events. Approximately 2000 volunteers were on hand to stage the broad-cast and staff pledge centres.
This year the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa demonstrated our commitment to supporting the children in our community. The 211 Air Cadet Squadron walked from Petawawa to Ottawa over a 5-day period and raised $10,400 which was presented at the Telethon. Ken Miller, Sandra Presley and Mike St. Louis looked exhausted but were grinning with pride! In fact, one Air Cadet walked the entire route! Many of our Key Club members assisted with the Telethon as well. Several Kiwanians worked all weekend, including Past Lt. Gov. Linda Clifford-Dashney and husband Ralph Dashney. Many Kiwanis Club members were in full force over the week-end staffing phones taking pledges and members from other Kiwanis Clubs joined us in the last two hours to make the cheque presentation to CHEO led by President Ian Hendry.
Congratulations to everyone who assisted with this terrific fund-raiser. The Committee was very proud to present the cheque to CHEO in the amount of $275,565.93 and top last years total raised for the Telethon at $2,601,674!
