The Honourable John Baird, the Minister of Community and Social Services, will be the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa. The meeting will be held at the Ottawa Congress Centre on Friday April 27th, 12:30 PM. This weeks meeting will launch the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
Mr. Baird is responsible for the Children’s Secretariat <http://www.childsec.gov.on.ca> in the Ontario Government, and in that capacity will be presenting a cheque to the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa to support its work on the education video, “Precious Minds” <http://www.preciousminds.org>.
The video is based on the ground breaking report, “Early Years Study”. The video is intended for parents and caregivers, and highlights the significant benefits created by reading to very young children. Over 5,000 copies of the Kiwanis video have already been distributed, and provincial funding will allow for even wider distribution.
The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is celebrating 84 years of active fund raising and community involvement as a not-for-profit organization. The largest Kiwanis Club in Canada, the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most active and dynamic service clubs in the world. Each year the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa returns $500,000 to the local community.
One of the 8,000 Clubs in Kiwanis International, the Club has met every Friday since 1917 at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa. Other projects carried on by Kiwanis in the Ottawa area include the Kiwanis Duck Race for Tiny Hearts, the “Never Shake a Baby” educational video, and the “Reading is Fundamental” project running at Connaught Public School.
