300 Ottawa Seniors take “High Tea” at the Chateau

Ottawa August 19, 2002 - Over three hundred Ottawa seniors will gather Thursday, August 22nd at the Chateau Laurier for the 11th Annual Seniors Tea at the Chateau sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa and Rideau Place On-The-River retirement residence.

The Kiwanis Club has been holding the tea for eleven years, and each year the event gets bigger - offering tea, entertainment and dancing. Bill Luxton and the Grey Jazz Band will provide the music and the Chateau staff will serve up the tea in the grand style in the main Ball Room. Each year Kiwanis volunteers approach Seniors Citizens Centres and retirement homes across Ottawa about the tea and the response is always enthusiastic.

As in past years, The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa will pay tribute during the Tea to a special senior chosen for their outstanding contribution to the community in general and to Seniors in particular. This year's recipient of the honour is Hugh Burwell. Mr. Burwell is a past president of the Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa and has been a member of its board since 1994. He has helped a great number of seniors through his continuing efforts in the area of computer training, free tax clinics throughout the region and was instrumental in the creation of a valuable Directory of Resources for Senior Citizens. Hugh spends a great deal of his volunteer time and energy trying to make this world a better place, both by direct effort and by his example.

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the largest service clubs in Canada and is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. Along with other local clubs, it continues to make significant financial contributions to hospitals, charities and those in need in the Ottawa area. The Tea begins at 1:pm Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the Main Ballroom, and is open to the media.
