The Festival has been in continuous existence from 1945 to the present. It was originally known as the Ottawa Music Festival Association until 1985 when the Kiwanis Clubs of the National Capital Region assumed shared responsibility with non-Kiwanian volunteers for the Festival. At that time the name of the organization was changed to the Kiwanis Music Festival.

Later the Festival was expanded to include Dance competitions as well as Music. The name of the organization was then changed to its current title. With the incorporation of Dance, the Festival has grown in size from about sixth place in the Province to second place.

The Festival has maintained a steady growth in number of entries ever since. 1998 will be the fourth year for Speech Arts. The first year saw our best go to the Provincial competition and after winning there proceeded on to win the National competition.

The Kiwanis Music and Dance Festival Association is responsible for preparing and presenting a competitive Music Festival annually. The Dance Festival is currently dormant while discussions are being held regarding the future of Dance within our organization. The 1998 Music Festival will take place over two weeks from April 16 to May 2 in ten different halls. All types of performers of all ages and degrees of education and ability will have the opportunity to perform and be adjudicated by teachers and performers of the highest professional standing from across North America. Altogether, about 4, 000 competitors will participate in the Festival, performing to audiences that will total over 10,000 people. This is only possible due to the efforts of over 400 volunteers, both Kiwanian and non-Kiwanian, who work for the KMDFA, giving over 3, 500 hours of their time each year.
