At the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Luncheon on Friday May 22nd, the Kiwanis Medical Foundation will present a cheque to the Bruyere Foundation to support their research on pressure sensitive mats to assess a patient's health status. This represents the 1st of a 2-part payment for a total of $25,000, of which $10,000 will be provided in 2010.
“The motto for Kiwanis is ‘One Can Make a Difference’, and our Medical Foundation has been identifying ways that medical research can help make a difference.” said Kiwanis Club of Ottawa President Peter Patafie. The Kiwanis Medical Foundation was formed in 1980 with an establishing gift from Dr. Lorne MacLachlan, and currently has approximately $780,000 in principal. The Foundation provides approximately $30,000 each year in funds for medical research.
The Bruyere Foundation is a health care organization committed to improving the quality of life of their patients and residents. They provide compassionate, exemplary care and promote excellence through teaching, education and research.
Since 1917 the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa has been active in fund raising and community involvement as a not-for-profit organization. The largest Kiwanis Club in Canada, the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most active and dynamic service clubs in the world. Each year the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa provides thousands of hours of community service and raises $300,000 for the local community.
One of the 8,000 Clubs in Kiwanis International, the Club has met every Friday since 1917 at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa. Projects carried on by Kiwanis in the Ottawa area include the Kiwanis Read-a-thon, the Kiwanis Music Festival, the “Precious Minds” educational video, the “Never Shake a Baby” educational video, and the “Reading is Fundamental” project running at Connaught Public School.
