Well, here we are at the height of winter and our annual deep freeze!! However, there is still plenty of hot action occurring at the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa!!
We just finished up with our 8th Annual Bedzzz Race led by Alison Hunter and Tyler McCabe. What a great time had by all, as we gathered to raise over $28,000 for our club and put a lot of smiles on the faces of the participants of the race and our members. Thanks to everyone for making this event a great success again!!
Our Interclub Sports & Social Committee (ISS) is also busy this month organizing a number of Interclubs to other Kiwanis clubs in the region. Led by Tom Burrow, new Chair for this year, Tom and 3 other members attended an Interclub at Manotick last week. On March 3rd over 8 members have committed to attending the Rideau Kiwanis Club as their guest speaker is Mayor Jim Watson. This past weekend, the ISS committee held a ski weekend at Mont Ste Marie attended by 12 Kiwanians who enjoyed the hospitality of fellow members Wayne & Firma French, Allan & Marjorie Castledine and Walter & Leslie Boyce. We had great ski weather, followed by a round robin dinner at the 3 residences of our hosts. For those members who enjoy winter sports of any kind, put this on your calendar for next year, and we hope that the ISS committee will plan this event again!! Thank you. In April, Tom and his committee are planning a Whine & Whiskey event that I'm sure will be a big success with our members. Plan to attend and you'll come away feeling engaged and pleased to be a Kiwanian!
Upcoming Luncheons - your Programme committee is busy planning some very interesting and entertaining luncheons in the next 2 months.
On March 4th, the Kiwanis Medical Foundation is hosting the luncheon with a special speaker, Dr. Graham Sher and presentation.
On March 11th, we are hosting the EC&C District Governor, Paul Toussaint of Martinique, with many other clubs and members attending.
On March 25th, we're holding the vote for TV Bingo to go forward as a permanent club fundraising initiative. Our guest speaker is Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of both the Canadian Museum of Civilization and Canadian War Museum. Please mark these dates in your calendar and plan on attending all of them!!
Membership - recently, I made an appeal to our members at the February 4th luncheon for members to get more involved in club affairs and reengage to find meaning in being a Kiwanian. One of my objectives this year is to increase our membership. So far, we've gained 4 new members this year, and lost 7. We still have a lot of work to do to increase our membership and need your committment to bring in new members. One way of overcoming our reticence to sell Kiwanis is to practice the "One Minute Elevator Speech" we can all learn to do. It's my intention to practice this on as many recipients as possible and to show members that we can grow our club. So can you too!! The speech can be downloaded off of www.kiwanisone.org our Kiwanis International website which is a great tool for all of us to access.
Please mark Thursday, April 28, 2011, 5:00pm in your calendars as that is our Annual General Meeting being held at the Hilton Ottawa Airport. This meeting will also be our Club Elections led by Immediate Past President Peter Nadeau who is leading a Nominating Committee who will present a slate of candidates for next year's Board of Directors. Please plan to attend as your VOTE counts and is needed.
Yours in Kiwanis,
