Weekly Meeting - Medical Foundation Luncheon - Dr. Pat McGrath

Dr. Patrick McGrath spoke on new pain research noting that Canadian doctors dominate the research in this area. Pain in children cannot be measured in traditional ways, such as sweating or increase in heart rate, so they must focus on a child's behaviourial changes. Distraction is one method for dealing with ongoing pain in young children and children who are in pain 20-30% of the time also suffer impairment in their cognitive development. With his mom and dad in the audience, Dr. Patrick was able to share some personal stories of his childhood.
