Weekly Meeting - Herb Gray - “Reflections of a Former Deputy Prime Minister”

The Right Honorable Herb Gray has a multitude of stories to share as a former Deputy Prime Minister who has held almost every office, but spoke as Chair of the International Joint Commission (IJC) Canada branch. Created in 1909 by treaty between the U.S. and Canada, the mandate of the IJC is to find solutions to problems relating to the many lakes and rivers in and adjacent to the border. For example, the IJC signed the initial agreement regulating water quality between the two countries, and in 1978 they began to focus on a more difficult problem: persistent toxic chemicals injuring wildlife and humans in and around the Great Lakes. The IJC is working to implement a process to restrict, phase out, and eventually ban the use and disposal of toxic substances.
