Mayor Larry O’Brien is creating a culture of success at City Hall and noted that the legacy of former mayors is their success in developing a loving, caring city with capable, thoughtful citizens. From the first mayor of Ottawa, John Bower Lewis, to today, not much has changed in the way of priorities. Back in 1857, the top two issues of the day were taxes and transportation.
Dominic D’Arcy, “The Singing Policeman” paid tribute to the mayors’ service over the years, with a newly written song titled “The Old Grey Mayors”. M.P.P. Jim Watson was at his best, enlightening those present on each of the former mayors and how they have each served their community so well. “We all have an obligation to give back to our community and each of you has had an impact on so many different fronts.”
President Neil thanked Vic Whittaker and Program Chair, Lynda Campbell, and the office staff for their work in ensuring a successful event.

President Neil’s Thought For the Week: It’s easy to make a buck, it’s a lot tougher to Make a Difference.
“One Can Make a Difference” – President’s Rose – Vic Whittaker Vic joined our Club in 1974, sponsored by former member Dave Thelen. Vic approached the Club with the idea of hosting a luncheon to pay tribute to all the former mayors of the Ottawa region, while celebrating Ottawa’s 150th anniversary. He spent many hours walking through City Hall confirming invitations and fielded continuous phone calls resulting in his own list of 110 very special guests. Vic has the gift of friendship and his respect and admiration for his fellow man is evident by those in attendance at this historic luncheon. In addition to calling everyone personally or going to see them, Vic approached his personal associates to be sponsors of the luncheon, covering the costs for the special guests, boutonnieres, photographers and the special souvenir photo that each former mayor will receive. Vic practices the Golden Rule, which is one of the Objects of Kiwanis International, and we are happy that he is a member of our club. Thanks for Making a Difference, Vic!
