Weekly Meeting - Don Drummond, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist, TD Bank Financial Group - "The Outlook for the Canadian Economy and Implications for Investment"

Don Drummond, Senior Vice-President & Chief Economist with the TD Bank Financial Group, noted that the world economy continues to expand at a strong pace with Asia leading the way. Although oil prices continue to go up, inflation remains under control. Canadian growth will be dampened by a slowdown in the U.S. economy and this slowdown will lead to a pullback in commodity prices. Businesses are facing many challenges and taxation continues to be a concern especially in Ontario where we have the highest rate of taxation.

President Designate Neil welcomed our two newest members. David Nidd was introduced by his sponsor, Howard Whittaker. David is the Manager of Business Development with the Business Development Bank of Canada. Major Larry Jones was introduced by his sponsor President Designate Neil McDonald , as one of our new Honorary Chaplains . Major Larry is the Executive Director for the Salvation Army Grace Manor. Raffle Prize – Congratulations to Barb Perrin, who won the raffle of a tickets to the Ottawa 67’s donated by Bill Gosewitz, to Paul Drouin, who won the raffle of a gift certificate to the Pelican Grill donated by Distinguished Past Lt. Governor Ron Wing, and to our guest Major Sardiana, who won the raffle of a Courriers CD, donated by Mark Max. Thank you all for contributing, $108.00 was raised for our General Account.

The Round Table provides you with an opportunity to have a nice lunch with your fellow Kiwanians and to catch up on what you did this summer! Lunch starts at 12:30 and you can be out of there by 1:30. This allows many of our members to participate in our Camp Smitty Hands-On weekend whereby we provide painters and laborers to assist the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club “Camp Smitty Hands-On Project Weekend”

Summer Dress is over! Now that August is behind us (sigh), Casual Business Dress has returned, which means gentlemen must wear a jacket to our luncheons, however, a tie is not required. The ladies of the club must also adhere to Casual Business Dress, and dress appropriately. A jacket and tie is required if you are seated at the head table.

SAGE: Senior Active Gentlemen Engaged - The Kiwanis Club of Sage will be holding their annual Charter Night on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 at the Nepean Sportsplex on Woodroffe. Cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Dinner at 7:00 pm $35.00 per person. The Sage Club was founded by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa in September 1975, under the leadership of the late Distinguished Lt. Governor Jack Gordon, who was selected to chair the Committee for this purpose. In the Annual Report of 1975, Jack says, "this was one of my most delightful Kiwanis experiences". We will be celebrating the success that we have achieved during the 1st year of the “Helping Hands" initiative. The celebration will take place in Gatineau Park on Saturday, October 14th in the form of a Kiwanis Club of Ottawa walk in support of Helping Hands. We would like to thank all of this year’s supporters, and Kathleen Holst’s team, by participating in a WALK in their honour. We would like as many members as possible from our club, with their families, to join us for this day of celebration, fun, and fellowship. Arrangements will be made for a picnic after the walk, where we can discuss our ideas for next year’s Helping Hands program. If you want, you are also welcome to have the office fax you a pledge form, for your friends to sponsor your walk, to close out this year’s program. Pledges are not mandatory for your participation in the walk and picnic. It is much more important for you to attend the event. The format of the picnic is for each family to bring their own food and beverages.
