As may of you are aware, the mandate of the Music Festival is to encourage and promote music through the youth in our community.
The Kiwanis Music Festival, National Capital Region is one of 250 local Music Festivals in Canada. Of the 250 Festivals, 37 are sponsored by Kiwanis, 199 are independently run and the remainder are sponsored by other Service Clubs. Canada also hosts 10 Provincial Festival's and 1 National Festival, all of which encompass the 750,000 young participants each year.
Ottawa has earned the reputation as being one of Canada's largest and finest local Music Festivals. It depends on approximately 400 volunteers who spend thousands of hours of their time each year at 12 different sites throughout the City. The Music Festival has swelled to cover three and a half continuous weeks from April 16 th to May 9 th , 2001.
There are at least four people at each site, every day, from 9 in the morning until 10 at night. This year we enjoyed 3,200 entries which translates into 8,000 performers participating in 669 classes at 201 sessions. Each one of these sessions runs three hours in length. From these performances, adjudicators make their recommendations for those who will go on to compete at the Provincial level.
The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa has been a tremendous financial support for these kids who might not otherwise be able to pursue their music at this level. Winners at the Provincial level will go on to the National Competition. Kiwanis continues to be a significant contributor to the success of the Festival, both financially and through its volunteers.
My thanks are extended to Ross and Hope Hadwen and to Shirley Tomblin for helping to organize volunteers from our Club.
