Kiwanis Luncheon - May 31 - Costco CEO Louise Wendling

Louise Wendling, CEO Costco Canada, was an excellent speaker. She explained the Costco business model which was of great interest to all of us, whether as Key Club’ers considering future career choices or for Kiwanians as shoppers.

Louise told us that:

  • Costco Canada members (over 18 years of age) total 10 million or 29% of our total population of 34.5 million.
  • Costco’s popularity is attributable to its value model (high quality, with the lowest possible prices on products).
  • Good humoured staff members.
  • Costco shares have generated an 18% average rate of return over the last 25 years.
  • A cashier at Costco, in their 5th year, earns $55,000.00 and in addition receives a benefits package which raises the total compensation to $76,000.00.
  • One percent of profits go to the community.
  • Costco Canada has an excellent student employment and scholarship program.
  • The average sales per store / warehouse is $190,000,000.00.
  • Louise would love to be able to drive down the cost of beer in Ottawa by selling it in her store, as they do in the Gatineau store.
